The Pros Answer to Defending the Smash & Option Routes vs the Cover 2

For the Coaches that run the cover 2, we all know that while the corners are occupied with the “Jam” and release of the #1 receiver. The offense will run “options” and “smash” routes trying to get the quick 5 to 6 yards.

Just think, a possible 5 to 6 yard gain by just taking advantage of the natural hole in the defense.

What the Quarterback is keying is the front side corners on #1. Once the corner makes contact and turns his back to the QB, the option route is coming.
