The most important coaching drills for defensive football!
The #1 determining factor in wins and losses is turnovers. Offenses minimizing and defenses maximizing the turnover ratio. This is a stat that holds true on every level of football from Pee-wee league on to the NFL. Therefore every opportunity you have in coaching your team you have to enforce the importance of winning the turnover battle.
County fair:
a series of drills dedicated to one purpose (in this case TURNOVERS)
(SPEED OF THE DRILL: 3 Quarter)
The defense is divided into three groups DL, Lbers, & Dbs
During each drill involving the ball hitting the ground there will be one group in a line perpendicular to the main drill that will recover the ball after the strip. Once recovered the one who stripped the ball shall turn up field and escort the one who recovered the ball to the end zone
Stripped the ball drill: Players start in a line, ball carrier in the front, the whistle blows and the ball carrier starts out chased by a defender. Once the defender gets to the point of attack he will secure the tackle with the far arm and execute one of the following techniques:
Rake: executed with the near hand, swiping down and ripping the ball out
Punch-out: executed with the near hand, timing the ball carriers motion of carrying the ball, punch up and through the cradle, just underneath the elbow
Strip: executed with the near hand, reaching over grabbing the nose of the ball ripping away from the ball carriers body
Strip the Qb: One player to hold the ball as if they were about to throw it. A cone or a player to represent the offensive tackle. A line of defenders are to sprint around the cone/blocker secure the sack with the far arm and strip down the Qb’s throwing arm with the near hand
Tip drill: One line of defenders, the coach facing them, at the whistle the first defender takes off toward the coach, the ball is then passed to that defender, he bats the ball straight up for the trailing defender to intercept the ball and return it for the score
Don’t let County fair be the beginning and the end of the turnover battle!
Turnovers are to be tracked everyday whether you’re a Pee-Wee team or a D-1 titan. Keep track of all the players creating turnovers and the players giving them up. On offense calculate the # of touches to the # of turnovers. The tally is to be shown to the team on a weekly bases.
One on One: encourage interceptions and strips
7 on 7 drill: Encourage the defense to intercept the ball without collision also encourage the defense to strip the ball without restricting the ball carriers running (minimize the chance of injury). At the same time make your ball carriers carry the ball high and tight that eliminates the ball being punched out & minimizes the fumbling ratio for your offense.
Team: Anytime you have a practice situation you have the best opportunity to see your playmakers on defense and the players that you can count on, on offense.
