 The Linebacker position has become more skilled in the recent years. The Linebackers today must be able to take on a block, make plays from sideline to sideline, occasionally rush the passer, drop back into zones, and cover in most cases faster skilled players. So, faster more athletic Linebackers are in high demand.
You must be in tune to the defense when playing Linebacker. The good ones know the defense just as good as the coaches. They align properly and if someone is in the wrong place, the good Linebackers get them in the place where they need to be. Good LBers also communicate, they make the necessary calls that need to be made and can also help the whole defenses play awareness by yelling out offensive tendencies that have been studied during the week through watching film. It takes a dedicated player to get to that level but, once there, he can take the team to new heights.
