Double Agent

One of the reasons that I made this website is to make people aware of the mistakes that I made throughout my life.  Choosing the right agent is definitely one of those mistakes.  It took me 3 times to get my agent situation right and now I’m finally content with the agent that I have.  He keeps me in the loop, when situations with teams go wrong, I know that he’s working.  You don’t want to feel like your in limbo if you get released for some reason and you don’t hear from your agent for weeks or months.

When I was coming out of college, I wasn’t rated that high at my position.   I was around 16th in the nation as a senior at my position.  I had 199 career tackles, 8 career interceptions, 2 sacks, 17 pass break-ups.  One day a runner comes to my room after the season was over and tells me he can get me into the NFL.  I always seen him at parties, he would say what’s up but I wouldn’t pay ant attention him.  So he starts showing up at my room everyday.  “Come on, lets go work out, lets go run, here take this money, don’t worry about it” getting me all comfortable with the situation before the pro scouts came to the campus.  After a while I got comfortable and signed with the agent that he supposedly worked with.  Instead of me doing my homework and looking up different agents, I let my agent choose me.  Not even the agent, I did worse, I got involved with a runner, who got me to sign with an agent that he knew.  I guess he got a cut of the agent fees.  All in all, don’t let the agent choose you, make sure you do the necessary background checks and homework on the agents that you think about hiring.  And remember that you are the boss and they work for you because it’s easy to get turned around and feel like your agent is the boss.  I’ll talk more about agents in the following weeks.
